Happy Dzień Położnej!! #midwivesday
To say that I owe my life and the lives of my children to #midwives is an understatement. I gave birth to Ilia in New York with a wonderful Midwife, Memaniye Cinque who supported us even when the medical doctors told us a C-section was inevitable as ilia was BREACH. She said "if your brave, we can do this." we did it. Then we moved to Poland and after months of searching I found a great midwife, Ewa Janiuk. Ewa came from far away because local midwives wouldn't do home births. I'm so grateful. Ina came out completely encased, "czepka urodziny" which is said to be good luck FOR LIFE.

Then things got real. Niu came into the world without any assistance. Irek was my midwife. Not because we didn't want a #real midwife, but because there were none available. Ewa moved to Warsaw (even further away) and every other midwife I called laughed when I told them I wanted to give birth at home. To say there is a shortage of warm, understanding, and open-minded midwives in the world is an understatement. We brought Noa into the world with a group of my closest girlfriends, Irek once again playing midwife.

It was thanks to my previous midwives who did #NOTHING while I birthed, that gave me the strength and courage to do it on my own. It became clear to me that a midwife doesn't have to be a medical professional. It can be anyone who is willing to put fear aside and trust the magic of a woman's body.

I say, Let's create a movement going forward. Let's inspire our little girls not to grow up to be instagram models, but to be midwives, officially or unofficially. To support other women friends who want to bring children into the world without fear that their bodies aren't good enough to take on the task. It's just not true. Let's teach our girls that giving birth is a right of passage, the becoming of a woman. That birthing is not something to be feared, and not an experience to be given over medical doctors unless absolutely necessary. Women, lets take back our births, with midwives as the candleholders. Wszystkiego najlepszego na Dzień Położnej.

yours truly,
Therapeutic Mama
